AI SEO — Getting Found by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Search

AI Overviews and chat-based search still reward the same fundamentals classic SEO does — we build both on the same technical and content foundation.

What you actually get

The technical groundwork AI search depends on

Structured data, fast page loads, clean crawlable markup and a clear content hierarchy — the same technical SEO checklist that helps a page rank in classic search is also what lets an AI system parse a page confidently enough to quote it. We don't treat AI-search readiness as a separate audit from technical SEO, because it isn't one.

Content written to be a direct, quotable answer

AI answer engines pull from pages that state a clear answer plainly, near the top, in a form that can be lifted and cited — not pages that bury the point under three paragraphs of preamble. We structure key pages around direct-answer sections and genuine FAQ content, without turning every page into a listicle. In practice that means the first sentence after a heading has to stand alone as a complete claim — if it needs the sentence before it to make sense, an extraction engine is more likely to skip it for a competitor's cleaner-structured page.

Authority signals built for a higher trust bar

Generative engines cite a small number of sources per answer, and they lean hard on trust signals to pick them — real author information, accurate and specific claims, and a site that reads as genuinely authoritative on its subject, not just optimized for a keyword. We write and structure content with that bar in mind, not just a ranking algorithm's.

Honest about what "AI SEO" actually means

The term gets used two different ways in this industry — optimizing content to be cited by AI answer engines, and using AI tools to speed up traditional SEO research and drafting. We do both, and we'll tell you plainly which one a given piece of work actually is, rather than letting the ambiguity do marketing for us.

Understanding AI SEO

01

What Is AI SEO?

"AI SEO" doesn't have one fixed industry definition yet, and it's worth being upfront about that instead of picking whichever meaning sounds better in a pitch. It's used two ways: optimizing a website so AI-powered answer engines — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot — surface and cite it when generating an answer; and using AI tools to do traditional SEO work faster, like research, drafting and technical audits.

In practice most agencies mean the first one when they contrast "AI SEO" against "traditional SEO," and that's the sense we use it in on this page. But if what you actually need is help using AI tools to speed up a content operation, that's a real, different conversation — ask us which one you're getting.

02

How It Differs From Traditional SEO

The target changes. Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranking position and a click. AI SEO optimizes for being one of a small number of sources an AI system actually quotes or cites inside a generated answer — most AI answers draw from only three to five sources total, so the bar to be included is narrower than the bar to rank on page one.

The content shape changes too. Traditional SEO still rewards short, search-bar-style keywords. AI systems respond better to content structured around the longer, more conversational way people actually phrase questions to a chatbot — which changes how a page's headings and direct-answer sections should be written, not just which keywords appear in them.

  • Traditional SEO: ranking position and click-through are the success metric
  • AI SEO: citation or mention inside a generated answer is the success metric — genuinely harder to track, since there's no standard analytics for it yet
  • Traditional SEO: backlinks are the dominant authority signal
  • AI SEO: direct entity mentions and topical authority carry major weight, even without a backlink attached

How We Actually Check Whether It's Working

There's no equivalent yet of a rank tracker for AI citations, so we're upfront about the tooling gap rather than implying we have a precision dashboard we don't. What we do is run a set of realistic target queries — the actual conversational questions a prospective customer would type into ChatGPT or Google's AI mode — against those systems on a regular cadence, and record whether and how a client's site gets mentioned or quoted.

That manual and tool-assisted check gets logged alongside the metrics that are still reliably measurable: organic rankings, referral traffic from AI-answer surfaces where it's trackable, and branded search volume, which tends to rise when a site starts getting cited more often even if the click itself doesn't happen. None of that is a substitute for a real analytics platform built for this — none exists yet — but it's a more honest picture than a vanity screenshot of one favorable ChatGPT answer.

FAQ

Questions before you get started.

No, and anyone who guarantees that is overselling it — there's no paid placement or guaranteed slot in a generative answer. What we can do is build the technical and content foundation that puts a site in genuine contention for citation, the same way honest SEO work has never guaranteed a #1 ranking either.

For most clients it's the same work, done with AI-search structure in mind from the start — not a separate line item. If you specifically want a focused AI-search audit of an existing site, we can scope that on its own.

Honestly, this is the hardest part — there's no equivalent yet of a rank tracker for AI citations. We check for direct mentions using manual and tool-assisted prompts against target queries, and we track it alongside the traditional rankings and traffic numbers that are still measurable, rather than pretending we have a precise dashboard we don't.

No — if anything the opposite. The sites AI systems cite most are overwhelmingly the ones with strong classic SEO fundamentals and trust signals already in place. AI SEO builds on traditional SEO; it doesn't replace it.

A mix of direct prompting against ChatGPT, Google's AI mode and Perplexity with realistic target queries, plus the handful of third-party AI-visibility trackers that have emerged recently — none of which we'd call mature yet. We treat all of it as directional signal, not a precise metric, and we say so rather than presenting a screenshot as proof of a trend.

Usually not — for most clients it's folded into the same content and technical SEO engagement, scoped once against the actual site rather than sold as a separate premium package. If you specifically want a standalone AI-search audit, we'll scope and quote that on its own.

The fundamentals — structured data, direct-answer content, E-E-A-T signals — apply regardless of size, but a local business benefits specifically from consistent NAP data and Google Business Profile completeness, since a lot of local-intent AI queries ('best X near me') pull from those signals alongside on-site content.
