Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring a website so generative AI systems — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot — can find, understand and cite it when they synthesize an answer to a user's question. It's a narrower, more technical term than "AI SEO," which gets used more loosely across the industry (see our AI SEO page for that broader picture).

Where classic SEO earns a click by ranking a link, GEO earns a mention or a direct quote inside an AI-generated answer — often without the user ever visiting the site at all. That changes what "success" looks like, and it changes some of the technical priorities involved in getting there.

These three terms overlap enough to genuinely confuse people, so here's how we use them: SEO is the broad discipline of being findable and rankable in search. Still speculative: precisely which structural change caused a citation to appear or disappear, since generative engines don't publish anything like a ranking-factors document, and their outputs can vary between prompts on the same query. We'll tell you plainly when a recommendation is based on documented technical requirements versus an informed pattern we've noticed but can't fully prove — treating the second kind as gospel is how this industry ends up full of confident-sounding advice nobody can actually back up.
